Toni Murphy has been recognised for her charity involvement and is up for an award at this year’s city council’s Extra Mile Awards.
Toni juggles her full time job, as credit control assistant for Acorn Recruitment and Training, with fundraising for charities including MacMillan, NSPCC and the Alzheimer’s group in Chepstow.
Originally from Ireland, Toni moved to Wales over 20 years ago where she now lives with her teenage daughter. Her first taste of fundraising came while helping to organise charity social events for local schools and churches where they lived.
She is now a member of Acorn’s fundraising and environment committees and is heavily involved with Acorn’s charity work, which over the past five years has raised over £60,000 for the NSPCC Cymru / Wales.
Toni, who has worked for Acorn for over five years, said: “Most weekends you will find me involved with some kind of charity event whether it’s organising a car boot sale, shopping event or a sponsored walk across the Severn Bridge. Since my mum was diagnosed with Dementia I’ve worked closely with the newly founded Alzheimer’s group in Chepstow. I am also involved with a Welsh company who specialise in selling unusual Christmas ornaments, which allows me to offer my services to help fundraise at any charity event.
“I love doing what I do and seeing that I make a difference is rewarding in itself, but to be recognised at the Extra Mile Awards is the icing on the cake.”
Accounts Manager at Acorn, Karen Davis, nominated Toni for her award. Karen said: “I think it’s admirable the work that Toni does in her free time, and her dedication to these good causes clearly shows how passionate she is about helping others.
“Toni is a great example to all her colleagues here at Acorn and we believe she really ‘goes the extra mile’ not just in the workplace but also, importantly, for her community.”
Toni also supports Severn Rescue Service, Police Firearms Charity, Motor Neurone Disease, Army Benevolent Fund, Help the Hero’s, Tenovus, Happa, Gloucestershire & Hereford Animal Rescue, St David’s Foundation as well as various local nursing homes, schools and play groups and schools.
This year’s awards ceremony will be held on Friday 3rd February at the Celtic Manor Resort.
